Character: Kevin "Agent Kay" Brown
Fandom: Men in Black
Character Notes: I will be taking Kay from in between the first and second movies ... that is to say, he will NOT remember having been a Man in Black until canon-updated. He'll be convinced he is a white-bread blue-collar representative of the U-nited States Postal Service. His wife will also not have left him yet. As such ... His personality section is going to have a Sub-Section. Which is only normal for a guy who can quote sections and subsections of intergalactic law on command.

ADDITIONALLY... Kay holds on to a couple of Really Big Secrets for a good 40 years. Said secrets are being KEPT secrets for the purposes of this application, because the mun does not want to spoil anyone reading this app who hasn't seen MIB3 yet. Since he won't be coming from that far in canon, they're not outwardly applicable. If the mods request detail on how they affect his personality, I would be happy to provide it ... but they're really just another layer of explanation for everything I'm going to detail here, anyway. Top crust of the pie.

I also ... have a ridiculous amount of headcanon regarding Kay pre-canon. Most of it can be found in survey/meme form in his journal.

History:
MIB Personnel File RFL-9000, Section 2: Agent Kay (CLASSIFIED):
((-- begin headcanon --))
- Born Kevin Thomas Brown of the Brown County Browns, in Padonia, Kansas: March 18, 1945.
- Family: Both parents, one younger sister, Lilah.
((-- end headcanon --))
- March 2nd, 1961: Stumbled accidentally into site of First Contact. Recruited due to uncanny ability to be personable with out-of-towners.
- 1961-1968: Trained as a Junior Agent of the Men in Black, charged with monitoring and policing alien activity on the Planet Earth, while keeping the existence of extraterrestrials a secret from the world populace at large. All outside contact with friends and family was severed per MiB regulations.
- 1968: Participated in the processing and handling of the Zoronian Migration.
- July 16, 1969: Present at the Cape Canaveral Incident. Information Classified: Access Denied.
- August 14th, 1972: Present at the Banishment of Serleena of Kyloth, which resulted in the death of Princess Laurana of Zartha and the expelling of the Light of Zartha from Planet Earth.
((In reality, the Light of Zartha has not left Earth, and Kay neuralyzed himself to keep its whereabouts safe in the wake of Laurana's death. Due to his DDD canon-point, he doesn't remember this yet... or the fact that in being sentimental and keeping the Light around, he's pretty much condemned the planet to getting obliterated. Good job, Kay.))
- Twenty-six more years of meritorious service with partner Agent Dee, primarily patrol in New York City and surrounding areas, with additional missions assigned as deemed necessary. Agent Kay was an integral part of Men in Black's development and modernization, working alongside MiB's director, Agent Zed. Gradually became, and rightfully so, "the most feared and respected human in the Galaxy" according to our out-of-towners.
- 1998: Neuralyzed and effectively retired Agent Dee, choosing as his replacement Agent Jay: formerly an undercover officer for the city of New York. Recovered the Arquillian Galaxy and diverted intergalactic war by disposing of a perpetrator known only as Edgar the Bug. Following this incident, Agent Kay willfully retired from MiB, feeling he had served his time.
- 2002 (Present Day): RETIRED. Agent is officially considered a Neutral, and has been reassigned to the United States Postal Service.

Personality: As far as the Men in Black are concerned, Kay is the agent's agent: he kicks ass, takes names, and never loses his cool while he's doing it. He takes his job very seriously and not seriously at all, all at the same time - since he's been with them since the beginning, he knows when it's okay to play a practical joke (like giving a Noisy Cricket to the rookie who'd underestimate it), and when it's time to buckle down. That sense of humor is well-hidden under his all-business facade, though: his humor is very dry and deadpan, and tends to sail over most people's heads at a nice comfortable altitude of about ten feet. He keeps to himself more often than not: there are secrets that he keeps which are important to far more than just the safety of the universe, and would hurt him far more than anything else ever could ... so if he appears to be sort of a tight-ass with a thing about keeping his lineface shut at first, it's not something anyone should take seriously. It's Just The Way He Is. Once someone gets to know him well enough, he'll loosen up and be personable ... he'll just still guard those certain secrets with his life.

"There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corellian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they do. Not. Know about it!"

Kay has been with the Men in Black for over forty years - which means he's seen anything and everything. There is literally nothing that fazes him. His usual reaction to anything that makes people scream and run in the opposite direction is generally a slight pause, then "Huh." It's handy, though - not having the typical reaction means that he's got just that much more time to get down to business. That being said, Kay will go to any extreme to complete whatever mission he's sent on: he's been eaten alive in the line of duty, and gone so far as to neuralyze himself to keep important information out of the hands of people who wanted it. Over the years, Kay's job has become his life, in every facet imaginable. As such, he takes pride in what he does, and wants to make sure it's done well, right down to every last detail. His philosophy is that if he can look in the mirror at the end of the day and say he did the best he could, that's good enough.

"I knew Roman. His wife cooked me dinner once, and while it was not pleasant, he was my friend."

One of the most important parts of Kay's job, in his mind, is not necessarily to know everything - he knows how dangerous it can be to look for something that it isn't your business to know - but to know what he knows so well that it's ingrained in his mind. He has the entire catalog of MiB rules and regulations memorized, knows each alien in his assigned territories by face and name, and knows them well: there are some he even counts among his friends.

As attached as he is to his work, Kay recognizes that he has to do something for himself, as well, and hold on to the person he was before he put on the suit - even though he was only sixteen years old when that happened. He keeps little pieces of his personal life personal: he's an avid reader and a lover of oldies and country music, but doesn't keep any complicated hobbies. He finds most of his joy in life on the job, in the smaller moments in between assignments, in the downtime with his partner and his co-workers.

The other agents and the regulars may as well be his family - though he isn't overly outgoing about showing it. His fondness for people shows through in the tiniest changes in his expressions or his tone, most of the time, and in his aforementioned sense of humor. If he picks on you, somehow, you're part of the family. He's also much more sentimental than he likes to let on - people that he makes connections with become very dear to him, rather quickly (over the course of one day, he got extremely attached to Jay, after all).

It takes a lot to make Kay lose his temper - he's seen enough weirdness and put up with enough idiots that he's usually a pretty chill guy. Once he does snap, though, it's only for a brief moment, and then he's over it - too many things are more important than getting pissy. The things he truly holds on to are his regrets... the things he has either done, said, not done, or left unsaid, that he wishes had gone differently. He's aware that there's not much to be done about them, but they follow him regardless. But there's a difference between regretting your actions, and actually hating them. There are sacrifices that Kay had to make for MiB that cost him more personally than he'd ever admit - but he knows that the sum of his regrets, large as they are, is dwarfed by what's grown out of the aftermath of his sacrifices. He takes both his pride and his strength from that, and it's helped him through even the longest of his nights. Once the morning comes - proverbial or otherwise - he's a master at adapting and moving on. The moment a situation is over, it's filed quietly away and the next moment is dealt with or enjoyed, depending on where it falls on his personal scale. As sentimental and internally deep as he is, Kay isn't one for discussing his life in great detail or length: he prefers to live what's going on right now, instead of looking back at what was. Time is a lot easier to handle, that way, from what he's seen.

Personality, Sub-Section - Kevin Brown: As a "neutral", Kevin is a MUCH more laid-back guy. As far as he knows, he spent thirty years of his life in a coma. It was a pretty raw deal, to be sure, but the fact that the girl he loved came around for him and married him anyway put an awful lot of frosting on what was kind of a burnt-up cake. Made it a lot easier to swallow, really. As such, he's gone to one or two therapy sessions and realized it's nothing he can't figure out on his own. He's got a job as postmaster of the local post office, and he puts himself wholeheartedly into the work. There's a strange, almost familiar joy he gets from knowing the place and the regular customers inside and out - like it's work he loves, even though the last work he remembers doing was on his family's farm. Something about the order and the routine just appeals to him, and he's made fast friends with everyone. That's the thing everyone in Truro, Massachusetts seems to notice about Kevin Brown: he's a hardass if you wrap your parcels wrong, but really, he's just a Nice Old Guy who takes it easy and keeps an eye on what goes on in his community.

Other: I have a RIDICULOUS amount of headcanon for Kay, especially his pre-canon childhood. There is a very long meme/IC survey I filled out for him several years ago which details most of that headcanon, and it can be found here if you ... really want to put yourself through it. Some of the dates a little wrong now that MIB3 has come out, but I'm working on tweaking that.

Once he gets canon-updated over the course of the game and gets back in the suit, Kay will also be able to world-hop: I'd consider it entirely feasible for MiB HQ to have technology that allows interdimensional travel ... though it would be classified and locked down, and he'd probably get in trouble for using it. Rules never stopped him before, though.

Additional Links: He won't have these for a little while, but here are links to his gear of choice: Series 4 De-Atomizer & the ever-present Neuralyzer. In addition, he carries a smaller sidearm called a J2, which looks about as close to a regular gun as MiB ever gets.

First Person (entry type):

[Kevin is dictating, mostly because otherwise, well, this post would take FOREVER for him to make.] Good morning, folks. I apologize for the lack of video, but this ... web. Cam that the little sticker on my monitor says is present is not exactly working at the moment. Beyond that, I doubt you want to see me first thing in the morning, anyhow. But I have a question for y'all guys, if you don't mind terribly.

Was there, by any chance, a virus that went through here, the other night? Because I fell asleep in my armchair, watchin' The Sons of Katie Elder, and when I woke up around 2 AM, I ended up starin' at the stars out the window and feelin' like I missed something.

Maybe I'm just getting old. [a long sigh] Anyway, if any of you'd be so kind as to get back to me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll be at work most of today, so just ... send me some of that electronic mail and I'll take my usual ten minutes to type you a nice polite five word reply.

Oh, and I apologize for "shouting" at some of you the other day. Who in HELL thought it would be a good idea to put the capital letter lock right above the shift key?

Third Person:

The whole drive back from Flushing Meadows to Battery Park was quiet, slimy, smelly hell. Kay at least had the driving itself to focus on, and Jay was talking to Dr. Weaver, who was perched in the back seat like she expected the cushions to try and eat her. Not that he blamed the woman after the night she'd had... but he'd had forty years' worth of quiet, slimy, smelly nights from hell, so he imagined he was handling it millions of times better than either of the LTD's other occupants. Besides, it was good that Jay had something to occupy himself with. It meant he didn't have to endure any more inane questions for the foreseeable future, and with his focus on the road, the chatter fell away into background noise, allowing him to actually think.

He'd done his job, after all: seen the mission through, saved the world, saved the galaxy, saved the day, hip hip hooray. Sure, there'd been casualties, but he'd kept the most important things and people safe, and that was what mattered. He sighed softly and glanced over at Jay as they slowed to a red light. Barely twenty-four hours, and the kid already looked perfectly at home in that black suit. Kay forced his eyes back on the road, not trusting himself, already feeling a lump forming in his throat that needed to be pushed down.

It had been long enough, the job was done, and it'd been done as well as he could've managed. With a slow, steady breath, Kay eased his foot onto the accelerator as the light changed. He was ready to go. With any amount of the luck they'd had so far, the kid would be, too.
